Smartwatches 2015: The Good - The Bad - The Ugly

Naturally all watches are good for telling time, but smartwatches are also good for wellness & fitness. Unfortunately this fashionable new innovation is bad for healthcare maintenance; and marketing of this much-hyped device is ugly in that it’s missing the most crucial market, senior citizens.

Indicators are very clear that these wellness & fitness digital trackers are already popular and sales expected to reach 121 million in 2018. But fashion and function divide the larger picture.

The healthcare community is divided on the clinical value of smartwatches and no way (yet) to synchronize its data with medical records in addition to security of this data.

Though a few in the industry appear to target an aging population, these fashionable accessories are not particularly senior-friendly. Efforts on their part, don’t meet market needs at all for seniors.

Currently 4 in every 10 smartphone users has problems even downloading an App. For that matter, these users may not even know how to send email from their phone. User manuals & videos are useful but only to an extent.

Smartphones 2016

Smartphones Will Become More Sophisticated & Powerful by 2016

Hope your skills are up to the task, smartphones are going to the next level of speed, functionality, innovation and who knows what else.

As you already know, the ‘smart’ in smartphone is provided by the efficient processors inside the device. The vast majority of these chips are provided by world leading semiconductor company, British-based ARM.  This company has now shipped over 60 billion of these high-tech chips.

They recently announced their latest developments will “set a new standard for premium experiences” on mobile devices from 2016 onwards. Read Article

Details of this upgrade gets technical, but what will emerge in 2016 will be far more sophisticated and powerful than what we currently have.  In addition to pushing the gaming experience to a new level this will undoubtedly provide new innovations not yet realized.

Perceive Seniors

Tech Designers Don’t Perceive Seniors Important!

Technology For An Aging Population

We are witnessing unprecedented development and diffusion of technology into all aspects of everyday life. Currently computers, communications, safety, and health monitoring devices are being used to perform routine tasks and activities. The use of technology has become an integral component of work, education, communication, and entertainment. Read Article

To date, however, evidence shows that the potential benefits of technology for older adults has not been realized. The widespread use of technology in the larger society suggests that the lack of technology use among older adults will have increasingly negative implications.

Older adults have largely been ignored as a viable group by designers of technology systems. Although older people will have more technology experience in the future, they may still have problems adopting or negotiating technologies with new features unless systems designers perceive older adults as an important user group and take their needs into account. The age-related digital divide could be closed if efforts are focused on that goal. (These statements are very disturbing to me)

To date, however, 90 million smartphone users are in need of an effective way of learning to use high-tech devices. Current methods of instruction very ineffective because innovators do not take their needs into account.  This post has me literally begging for your support!

Independent Seniors

Independent Seniors – The Lively App

This app comes with sensors which are placed on objects in the home such as pill bottles, doors, cabinet or refrigerator. They detect when the resident is taking medication, getting food or leaving home and no internet connection is required.  Signals are sent to Lively’s website for family members and caregivers to monitor.

A great App for the independent senior and family members.

90 million smartphone users don’t know how to download an App. Current methods and/or formats of instruction are ineffective or have just failed.  User manuals or videos have not met requirements for today’s mobile technology.

Apple iWatch 2014

Apple iWatch Thin Bracelet Concept 2014

Introduced in early 2013, now the concept is bracelet but the manufacturer is not committed to this yet.  Focus appears to be on how comfortably the device sits on the wrist and not on functionality within the screen.  The Apple style will definitely be on display in the Apple iOS and this is a very impressive concept model. (As if anyone expected less)
