Many of us have been there: Parents or grandparents show off a brand new device they just got, but they have no idea how to set it up or use it. So being the nice tech minded person you are, you volunteer your services for basic instruction to help get them started. My friend, you have just fallen for one of the oldest tricks of the 21st century; now you’re stuck with endless calls, texts, emails, smoke signals and snail mail as your elderly loved-ones struggle over and over again with this new-fangled technology.
This is exactly the position of the U.S. government with the largest aging population in the nation’s history. The leadership really wants to acclimate these senior citizens to the new technologies that are emerging every day, that are making everyone’s life so much better. But you know from your own experience, that this is going to be epic arduous project in and of itself. So, who you gonna call?
Seth Sternberg thinks he has the answer that can help these boomers and their parents, get the help they need as they transition in life without ever leaving their homes. He’s founder and CEO of “Honor,” a startup that helps seniors find professional caregivers through an online marketplace. The goal of the company is to ensure aging Americans will be able to stay at home in this stage of their life and no more retirement homes or visiting faraway hospitals.
Honor plans to make their goal a reality by trying to improve industry care by increasing the salaries of the caregivers and making caregiver selection easier and more transparent through technology. They have a mobile platform which allows family members to track comings and goings of caregivers, so they’ll know who is caring for their loved one and when. This is a much cheaper option as opposed to hospital visits and nursing homes.
Medicaid recently released a study showing that house calls are a much cheaper option, reducing the cost of care by more than $3,000 per beneficiary.
