'Being on the wrong side of the Digital Divide has consequences, sometimes serious.'
Sacramento, CA. – Digital inequalities broadly defined in terms of people’s internet/mobile usage, skills & self-perceptions, are as important as traditional measures of inequality that we are all too familiar: gender, race, Age and health. These same inequalities have carried over into the online environment which social science is only beginning to grasp.
Current studies & reports indicate those who function better in the digital realm and participate more fully in digitally mediated social life enjoy advantages over their digitally disadvantaged counterparts. Social inequality exists in every society and are generally categorized as Gender, Racial & Ethnic, Age and Health. These same inequalities have carried over into the online environment with primarily volunteers attempting to address it.
Social City Net is launching a crowdfunding campaign on Indigogo.com to fund a hybrid webinar service to assist individuals in the process of learning new technology whereas the mobile device has become less a luxury and more a necessity.
Without a doubt, forms of digital exclusion are increasing. As the internet seamlessly integrates itself into everyday routines, these digital disparities can effect normal functions of daily life; finding work, building businesses, shopping, accessing healthcare, learning, socializing and even replying to surveys.
To cite an example; “Of those who died during hurricane Katrina, more than 70% were senior citizens and many who survived did not get proper medical treatment because health records were lost to the storm.” Could knowledge of technology and a mobile device have made a difference before, during or after this situation -or any natural disaster?
The smartphone impact on society has only begun and we all must become a little Tech-Savvy.
