Phyllis Sues – Becoming Computer Savvy At 91
It was about 10 years ago when a good friend told Phyllis “If you don’t get a computer you can’t keep up, understand, or live in my world of electronics”. After a year of this pressure she bought an Apple desktop and it looked very impressive to her sitting there on the table. But this was a completely mysterious object, she had never used even a typewriter. Every word she had ever written was done in long hand on a legal pad and someone else would transfer it to this magical instrument (computer).
Just recently this 91 year old authoress, dancer, musician learned how the shut down this machine that was both amazing and frightening to her. It made her feel truly helpless and suspected she was not alone in this dilemma. At this point of her learning process she can print her blogs, but if a sentence jumps into and un-intended space she is lost at how to retrieve it. Aware that kids are completely comfortable with a computer, these moments make her feel 91 is not just a number!
Phyllis thinks she is very aware for her age, but this instrument called a computer gives her real doubts. Will she ever type with all 10 fingers? You must be kidding, I’m still a one-finger phenomenon that just mastered “shut down” she says.
“So at 91, I continue yoga, tango, jump rope and skydiving. I do write emails daily, so I’m improving and yes one finger! Oh please someone save me from this helpless feeling! There’s an expression, it’s called Computer Savvy. It is not yet in my vocabulary. I want it! I REALLY WANT IT!”

You must read her article for yourself. It’s the sweetest read I’ve had all year. It also says how little we’ve done to help seniors not only to learn new technology, but enjoy it. Go Phyllis Go!
